Learner Experience

How learners view and navigate lessons: progress tracking, scoring, completion dialogs, mobile navigation, sidebar, certificates

Written by Patrick Elzinga

The learner experience

Mindsmith lessons and courses adapt to desktop and mobile screens. The exact controls a learner sees depend on the author’s navigation, grading, narration, language, and delivery settings.

Try the learner experience in the interactive lesson below:

Moving through content

Learners use the on-screen Back and Continue controls to move between pages. On supported mobile layouts, they can also use touch navigation.

  • With Open navigation, learners can revisit or jump to available pages from the navigation sidebar.

  • With Restricted navigation, learners move through content in order and must satisfy any blocking requirements before continuing.

  • If Require Interactives is enabled, learners must use the interactive content required on the page.

  • A Video tile with Video must be completed enabled must be watched before it is complete.

Navigation sidebar

The sidebar shows the lesson or course outline and progress. Learners can open or close it from the navigation controls; on smaller screens it opens as an overlay.

Depending on the content and settings, the navigation area can also include:

  • A language switcher for translated content

  • An LMS exit button

  • Narration controls

  • An options menu

The options menu can provide fullscreen viewing, issue and content reporting, restart, and an earned certificate download. After a SCORM lesson is complete, it can also provide an option to resend the completion event. Only actions that apply to the current launch are shown.

Narration

When narration is present, learners can play or pause it, follow its progress, adjust playback speed, and read the narration text. If the author enabled autoplay, narration begins after the browser permits audio playback; most browsers first require a click, tap, or key press.

Questions, scores, and retries

Question tile feedback depends on the tile’s author settings. A question may show correctness and feedback immediately, wait until the page or assessment is submitted, or remain ungraded.

Lesson settings determine the passing percentage, the number of question retries, which section is scored, and whether completion also requires viewing the content. A Conversation or branching scenario can contribute its own graded result when configured to do so.

Completion and certificates

When the learner meets the completion criteria, Mindsmith can show a completion dialog with their result and score. If they have not passed, the available retry or restart actions depend on the author’s settings.

When certificates are enabled and the learner passes, the completion dialog offers a certificate download. The learner enters a name and valid email address to create the PDF. Certificates cannot be downloaded from authoring Preview mode.

Progress and completion can also be sent back to an LMS for SCORM launches.
