Themes & Branding

Selecting and customizing themes, colors, fonts, logos, org-level branding

Themes and branding

Themes control the shared visual style of a lesson or course: its page background, typography, text colors, accent colors, and logo. Open a lesson or course and select Theme in the editor toolbar.

An organization can restrict theme editing to Admins. When that restriction applies, other authors can select an available theme but cannot customize it.

Choose and save a theme

Use the theme selector to choose a built-in preset or an organization custom theme. Changing a theme setting creates a draft, shown with an asterisk.

  • Select Save New to name the draft as a reusable custom theme.

  • When the draft began from a custom theme, select Save to update that theme.

  • Open the menu on the selected custom theme to rename it.

Authors and Admins can also open Settings → Branding in Organization Settings to create, edit, delete, and choose the organization’s default theme, unless the organization restricts theme editing to Admins. New organization content starts with that default. If an authorized editor deletes a custom theme that is in use, affected content changes to the default theme.

Page background and text

In the Theme panel you can:

  • Choose a page background color

  • Upload, replace, or remove a background image

  • Set separate title and content overlay colors for a background image

  • Choose header and paragraph fonts, weights, and colors

  • Enter precise colors in the color pickers

  • Turn on Auto Color Text for text shades derived from the page color

When manually selected text and background colors do not meet the editor’s minimum contrast target, Mindsmith shows a contrast warning.

Custom fonts

Open a header or paragraph font selector, choose Custom Font, and enter a font name. Upload the Regular file, which is required, and optionally upload separate Italic and Bold files. Mindsmith recommends .woff2; .woff, .ttf, and .otf are also supported.

The current font editor does not have a separate Bold Italic upload. You can still format text as bold and italic, but if your brand requires a specific Bold Italic font file, preview that styling carefully because it cannot be supplied as a separate face.

Accent colors

The main accent color styles buttons and other emphasized elements. You can add a secondary accent and additional reusable colors, then remove or change those colors later. Individual tiles and rows can use these theme colors through their appearance controls.

Add a logo

Logo branding is available on paid plans.

  1. Select Logo in the Theme panel.

  2. Upload an image or choose one from the organization Media Library.

  3. Choose White Background, Rounded, or None for the logo treatment.

You can change or remove the logo later. A course logo applies across the course; a standalone lesson can use its own logo. Lessons inside a course use the course’s branding context.

Course header

Courses have additional header controls:

  • Default layout supports Blend or High Contrast styling and an optional header image.

  • Portrait and Immersive layouts use their own header composition and support an image with an overlay color.

Depending on how the course was created, the image picker can offer image generation in addition to search and upload.

Tile and row appearance

A theme supplies defaults, but you can override the appearance of a particular row or supported tile from its appearance controls. Use Reset to Theme when you want that row to follow the theme again.

Some organizations may also see Advanced Styles while that feature is enabled. Those controls extend the same theme rather than creating a separate learner style.
