Grading in Mindsmith lets you define what counts as success in a lesson. You can set a passing score, control how many times learners retry questions, decide which sections are graded, and issue completion certificates. These settings help you design assessments that match your learning objectives and give you reliable proof of learner progress.

Where to find grading settings

You can manage grading at the lesson level:

  1. Open your lesson

  2. Click the Settings cog in the upper right

  3. Select the Grading tab

You can also view and adjust default grading settings from your main dashboard:

  • Go to Settings and Members on the left sidebar

  • Under Default Settings, select Grading

Grading Settings in Mindsmith

Passing percentage

Set the minimum score learners must achieve to pass a lesson.

  • Why it matters: Establishes clear benchmarks for success and helps you track mastery consistently.

Question retries

Decide how many times a learner can attempt a question.

  • Why it matters: Controls whether you want strict assessments (single attempt) or practice-oriented learning (multiple retries).

Select graded content

Choose whether grading applies to all interactive content or only specific sections.

  • Why it matters: Keeps the focus on what matters most. For example, you can grade a knowledge check at the end of a lesson without grading introductory activities.

Completion criteria

Define the requirements for marking a lesson complete:

  • Require all content to be viewed

  • Require specific graded activities to be passed

  • Include or exclude interactives like flashcards, accordions, or hotspots

  • Why it matters: Gives you control over what learners must do before earning credit or moving forward.

Completion certificates

Allow learners to download a certificate once they meet your defined completion rules.

  • Why it matters: Provides tangible proof of completion for compliance programs or professional development records.

Which tiles can be graded?

Grading applies to assessment tiles, including:

  • Multiple choice

  • Multi-Select

  • Matching

  • Ranking

  • Short Answer

📌 Tip: Some tiles, like questions and short answer, include their own grading settings in addition to the overall lesson grading. For example, you can adjust how many points a question is worth, or set custom evaluation criteria for short answers. These options give you finer control at the tile level while lesson grading settings define the bigger picture.

Tip: Align grading settings to your learning goals

  • For compliance training: Use higher passing thresholds and limit retries

  • For practice and mastery: Allow multiple retries and focus grading on key sections

  • For learner motivation: Offer certificates to recognize achievement
